Most functional appliances are removable appliances fitted in children. The most common type of functional appliance is a 'Twin Block'. A Twin Block has two parts, one that fits in the upper jaw and one that fits in the lower jaw. They alter the bite of the teeth by holding the lower jaw forwards.
Functional appliances are usually worn on a full-time basis, day and night, for about
9 to 12 months. They must be removed for cleaning, swimming and contact sports.

The teeth may be a little tender for a few days after the brace has been fitted. If necessary, painkillers such as the ones you would normally take for a headache, may help (please follow the recommended dosage on the packet). If there is an obvious area of soreness as a result of the brace, ring for an appointment during normal working hours. If possible, do not stop wearing the brace.

Your speech will be different at first. Practice speaking with the brace in place by reading out aloud to your parents at home, and in this way your speech will return to normal more quickly.
You may also find yourself producing more saliva than usual and swallowing a lot to begin with. This is quite normal and will quickly pass.
You will need regular appointments during treatment for the brace to be adjusted.
It will be important for you to continue to have routine checkups with your family dentist throughout orthodontic treatment so that your teeth can be checked for decay.
Further orthodontic treatment with fixed braces may be needed after functional appliance treatment.
